Arsenic and Old Lace is a play that requires clear traffic patterns and careful attention to the entrances, exits, collisions, and near-misses of characters. The main goal of the set is therefore to support the timing of the action. Once the logistics of the groundplan were worked through, there was still extensive work to be done in establishing the visual rhythm of the architecture to avoid calling attention to the

patterns of movement. The aesthetic tries to provide a prim, rigid, and faded environment in which the unfolding absurdity can be accentuated.
