Antony and Cleopatra depicts the ancient world on the brink of collapse as sexual politics and interpersonal rivalries erupt into war, treachery, and betrayal. The rapid-fire succession of scenes sweeps across the known world, so the set pulls Greek, Roman, and Egyptian influences together to suggest the scope of the actions and impacts of the political maneuvering.
The chaotic imagery is inspired in part by the High Renaissance frescos of Giulio Romano in the Palazzo del Te.
