Peaceable Kingdom

Mary Tuomanen’s colonial fantasia is rooted in the folk art paintings of Edward Hicks.  It was important to honor this hand-crafted feeling in the production, so the whole set was made of woven, braided, or sewn fabrics applied over soft structures that evoked natural forms through an overtly human-made lens. The glow of the trees and the drop evoked the sacred majesty of life, while the uncovered windows of the space allowed a passage of the world into darkness as the play progressed.
