Utah Shakespeare Festival, Cedar City, UT

2013-2015 – Charge Scenic Artist. Oversaw crews of 5-16 scenic artists working in various spaces to produce multiple shows simultaneously. Handled budgets, ordering, and staffing for paint department. Communicated with technical directors, designers, production management, and directors to ensure that work flow and scheduling were as efficient as possible.

Geva Theatre Center, Rochester, NY

2008-2014 – Charge Scenic Artist. Supervised one full-time employee and many overhire painters in the execution of sets for a two-stage LORT B theatre. Handled budgeting, staffing, and related tasks. Coordinated work flow in a shared workspace with carpentry department. Participated in several staff committees, as well as educational and audience-outreach programs and activities.

2006-2008 – Assistant Charge Artist. Worked closely with Charge Artist to develop scenic treatments for all shows. Served as Charge Artist for some shows in NextStage space.

Hangar Theatre, Ithaca, NY

2007-2012 – Charge Scenic Artist. Led a crew of college-aged scenic artists in executing all treatments for Mainstage shows, Kiddstuff children’s theatre shows, and Wedge experimental shows. Handled budgeting and coordinated workflow in a space shared with props and carpentry. Communicated extensively with designers, other department heads, and directors to ensure the best product could be achieved on a tight time frame.

2002-2006 – Worked on a show-by-show basis for many theatres and theatre companies in the Chicago area in positions including set designer, scenic artist, carpenter, electrician, director, and production manager. Companies include Mercury Theatre (set designer, scenic artist), The Side Project (set designer, scenic artist, carpenter), Tantalus Theatre Group (many capacities), Breadline Theatre (scenic artist, carpenter), The Court Theatre (electrician), and Red Moon Theatre (electrician).

Dogwood Dell Amphitheatre, Richmond, VA

2002 – Scenic Artist/Set Designer. Executed all treatments for 3 shows in a large outdoor theatre, served as assistant designer on Bad Seed and co-designer on Into the Woods.

Good Time Theatre Company, Saginaw, MI

2001-2002 – Set Designer/Scenic Artist. Served as one of two full-time technicians for a touring children’s theatre company. Designed two of the sets, which travelled in a van and were set up by the actors. Painted all scenery for the company, and assisted in carpentry as needed. Occasionally toured with casts to assist with setup and strike on new shows or tightly-scheduled days.

2020 – Instructor: Geva Summer Aircademy. Co-taught a four-week remote summer class for high-school students interested in theatrical design. The class focused primarily on basic elements and principles of design with some projects in all areas of design.

Skills and Capacities

• Design rendering in hand techniques with media including pencil, marker, gouache, and watercolor.

• Rendering and imaging in Photoshop and Sketchup, and digital manipulation of traditional hand-rendered media.

• Drafting in Vectorworks and by hand.

• Model-making, including construction, textures, hand and digital color elements, 3D printing, and laser cutting.

• Extensive scenic art skills, including: color mixing, drop painting, cartooning, texturing, distressing, carving, sculpture, street art, and mural work, as well as some experience with dyes and fabric painting.

• Substantial experience in all aspects of running a professional paint shop, including budgets, work flow management, staffing, and communicating with personnel and guest artists.

• Carpentry skills including all aspects of standard theatrical construction in wood, fluency with common power tools, and familiarity with safety protocol and equipment. Limited experience in theatrical metalworking.

• Some experience in propcraft, sewing, and electrics.
