The chaotic and constant shifting of place in A Free Man of Color lent itself to a set that could evoke 1801 New Orleans without holding us there. The presentational quality of the piece suggested the false proscenium with its in-one curtain, and the wrought ironwork of New Orleans suggested its form. A constant stream of projections added to or mitigated the chaos, giving us definition or abstraction as necessary.
